[gvttc general] A Nice Read - 1994 Detroit Teams Tournament Summary

Hi all … 

I’d like to thank Dave Colt for digging this up. I thought many of you would like to read it.  Back in 1994, three teams from Rochester went to the USA Team Tournament that was hosted in Detroit each year.  A member of each team took the time to summarize the results in a document that was passed around the club.
Thanks to Dave, we now have our hands on this and it brought back some amazing memories and reminded us of some of our favorite players.  Keep in mind, back then we played best of 3 and games to 21 where each player served 5 in a row.


Team 1

Bob Brickell  (nobody ever liked playing him … short and long pips … ugh)
Robert Maronian (strong defensive chopper with pick you apart forehand attacks)
Andy Barron (the human angle blocker!!!)
Andre Maronian (I was 21 years old …. went into the tournament rated 1716 and came out 1795)

Team 2

Dave Colt  (solid all around game)
DJ Colt  (was rated over 2000 going into it … probably around 16 years old or so?)
Lucas Colt   (the younger brother, didn’t say much but he gave people FITS)

Team 3

Dave Jess (The windmill forehand loop)
Fernando Ofray (This document reminded me of him …. nice man!)
John Vanduersen (Long pips phantom rubber player … bugged all who played him)


I thought I’d pass it along.  Additionally, we plan on archiving as much of our history we can in a new website we’re in the middle of developing (stay tuned … it’s really coming together nicely).  If you have any history, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pass it along to me so we can organize and roll it out.
